What is a Silken Windhound??

Only the next best kept secret! (Just kidding - or am I?)

If you're new to hearing about the breed, you're not alone. They are rare, and brand-spanking new to the world of AKC, only getting accepted into their FSS (Foundation Stock Service) program in April 2026.

"Silkens" were created to meet a niche in the world of sighthounds and are truly American! They are exactly what I was looking for when I was exploring a breed other than my beloved Whippets; a medium-sized sighthound with moderately long hair! I could still carry them if they needed to be, and they could use all the same size equipment as my whippets! Problem was, at the time, they weren't accepted into AKC. They were however recognized in UKC, ASFA and other venues I frequented.

In 2021, Norman (fka Blaze) joined us first from Starfyre Silkens, and soon-after so did his brother, Whisper. We sent "Blazin'-Norman" off to live with his current owner Josh after a couple of years with us, and after finishing his UKC Ch and getting a good start into racing (LGRA & NOTRA).  Whisper stayed with us here at Warrior's, and was later joined by Cassi from Aeracura Silkens. 

Now back to the AKC thing...

Most were certain the Silkens wouldn't be accepted into AKC. I didn't buy into that story easily, but it wasn't until after I became president of the International Silken Windhound Society (ISWS) in 2025 that I could begin to do anything about that process. Working together with our AKC Liaison, Joyce Chin, we proceeded to confirm that AKC did in fact want us to reapply and we discovered we had also finally met the requirements to submit for AKC BOD to review. I then went through about 5 years' worth of data to create a solid application, and with the ISWS BOD's approval, we submitted our application. A few months later, we had our answer - we got in!

So now begins the process with the FSS onboarding team, and a solid team they are! 

Long story short, we owe a lot of gratitude to the founder who's brainchild this breed is, to those who helped form the International parent club, to those who have contributed years of work as breeders and exhibitors, those who are presently working behind the scenes with onboarding and data entry, and to many others, as without them where we stand today with the AKC would not have been possible. It's been even cooler and humbling to be included on such a major part of the process. I feel honored to have been involved to this wild ride of dogs! 

And to think - it was all just a dream...
